Google Fixes Global Gmail Email Sorting and Spam Alert Malfunction

Google has confirmed the successful resolution of a widespread technical malfunction that disrupted Gmail’s email classification and spam detection systems for users around the world on Saturday, January 24, 2026.

The issue, which persisted for much of the day, interfered with Gmail’s automated inbox organization features, resulting in a surge of promotional and social emails appearing directly in users’ Primary inboxes. According to Google’s Workspace Status Dashboard, the incident began shortly after 5:00 a.m. Pacific Time and was fully resolved by 9:55 p.m. PT.

Gmail’s tab-based sorting system-designed to separate messages into categories such as Promotions, Social, and Updates-failed to function as intended during the outage. As a result, users reported an overwhelming influx of non-essential emails mixed in with personal and work-related messages.

Compounding the disruption, Gmail’s spam detection mechanism also experienced irregular behavior. Many legitimate emails were flagged with a cautionary yellow banner warning users that the message had not been fully scanned for spam or potentially harmful content. This led to confusion and concern, particularly when messages originated from trusted contacts or known organizations.

Reports of the malfunction quickly spread across social media platforms, online forums, and outage-monitoring websites. Users described inboxes becoming unmanageable and expressed frustration over the need to manually filter large volumes of email. Some individuals also noted delays in receiving important messages, including one-time passcodes and authentication emails required for accessing other digital services.

Initially, responses from Gmail’s official support channels directed users to standard troubleshooting resources. However, as reports increased, Google acknowledged the broader scope of the issue and advised users to monitor updates through its official status dashboard.

Throughout the day, Google engineers worked to stabilize the affected systems. In a public statement, the company said it was aware of incorrect email categorization and temporary spam warnings affecting some accounts, adding that teams were actively addressing the problem.

By late evening, Google confirmed that normal Gmail functionality had been restored. In a final update, the company stated that all impacted services were operating normally and announced plans to release a detailed incident report following an internal review.

Google thanked users for their patience and reiterated its recommendation that users remain cautious when interacting with unfamiliar messages, even during technical disruptions.
