Two Killed in Series of Attacks in Northern Israel; Authorities Label Incident Terror-Related

Northern Israel witnessed a deadly sequence of violence on Thursday, December 26, 2025, after a vehicle ramming followed by a stabbing attack left two people dead and another injured. Israeli police described the incident as a “rolling terror attack” that unfolded across multiple locations within a short span of time, prompting an extensive security response and renewed political debate over counterterrorism measures.

According to official statements, the attack began in the city of Beit Shean, where a vehicle struck pedestrians in a busy area during the afternoon hours. A 68-year-old man, identified as Shimshon Mordechai, was killed at the scene. A 16-year-old boy was also injured in the ramming and was taken to hospital for treatment. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but the older victim was pronounced dead despite medical efforts.

After the initial incident, the suspect reportedly fled the scene by car and drove approximately eight miles toward the Ein Harod area. There, the attacker carried out a second assault, fatally stabbing 18-year-old Aviv Maor. Authorities later clarified that the victim succumbed to his injuries despite attempts to provide lifesaving care. The attack sequence ended near the city of Afula, where the suspect was confronted by a civilian security officer.

Police said the suspect was shot and wounded during the confrontation and was subsequently taken to a hospital in moderate condition. The individual was identified as a 37-year-old Palestinian man from the village of Qabatiya in the northern West Bank. Israeli officials stated that he had been working illegally in Israel and allegedly used a vehicle belonging to his employer during the attacks. While the investigation remains ongoing, police indicated that preliminary findings point to terrorism as the motive.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and police immediately increased their presence across northern regions following the incident. Military officials confirmed preparations for operations in and around Qabatiya, including raids on the suspect’s family home. Security forces were reported to be mapping the residence as part of standard procedures that may include demolition, a practice Israel has used in past cases involving fatal attacks.

Israeli leaders reacted swiftly, condemning the violence and offering condolences to the families of the victims. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed his “deepest sympathies” and praised the civilian who intervened to stop the attacker, describing the response as decisive in preventing further casualties. Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that he had instructed the IDF to act “forcefully and immediately” in the suspect’s area of origin to disrupt what he described as terror infrastructure.

National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir used the incident to renew calls for tougher legislation, arguing that the attack highlighted the need to advance a proposed law allowing for the death penalty for terrorists. Israeli President Isaac Herzog also issued a statement, saying he was shocked by what he called a “horrific killing spree” and reaffirmed Israel’s commitment to strengthening security measures to protect civilians.

International reactions followed as well. The United States Ambassador to Israel condemned the attacks, describing them as acts of violence against innocent civilians and reiterating support for Israel’s right to defend its population. Meanwhile, Hamas released a statement framing the incident as an expression of popular anger linked to the broader conflict, though the group did not claim responsibility for the attack.

By Thursday evening, local officials in Beit Shean said the immediate situation was under control. A municipal spokesperson noted that residents were gradually returning to routine activities, including attending synagogue services, under heightened security.

As investigations continue, Israeli police urged the public to remain vigilant and to follow instructions from security forces. The incident is likely to intensify ongoing debates within Israel over security policy, legal measures against terrorism, and the broader challenges of maintaining stability amid a protracted and deeply rooted conflict.
