UK Prime Minister Says Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Likely Directed Suspected Air Base Plot

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has accused Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of almost certainly directing a suspected plot targeting a British air base used by the United States military, raising concerns about the potential expansion of tensions between Tehran and Western governments.

Addressing Parliament on Monday, October 12, Burnham said British assessments indicated that the alleged operation was highly likely to have been coordinated from Iran. He warned that the government would take further action against suspected Iranian-linked networks operating within the United Kingdom.

The allegation marks a significant escalation in Britain’s public response to the security incident at RAF Fairford, an important military installation in Gloucestershire that has hosted American strategic bombers.

Security Concerns Prompt Investigation

The incident came to light after five British men in their 20s were arrested near the air base in the early hours of September 27. They were initially suspected of terrorism-related and explosives offences.

The men were subsequently released on police bail under strict conditions without being formally charged. Investigators have continued examining whether a foreign state may have played a role in the suspected operation.

Separately, concerns about a possible Iranian-linked drone attack prompted the United States to remove approximately a dozen B-1 strategic bombers from the facility earlier this month. The aircraft’s relocation highlighted the seriousness of the intelligence concerns surrounding the installation.

However, authorities have not publicly established whether the men arrested near the base were directly connected to the suspected drone threat or whether the incidents involved separate plans.

UK Considers Stronger Measures Against Iran

Burnham said Britain would intensify efforts to disrupt criminal networks suspected of acting on behalf of Iran. He indicated that the government could use additional legal and financial measures, including sanctions, to limit the activities of Iran and the IRGC.

British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband also confirmed that Iran’s ambassador had been summoned to the Foreign Office in London to address the allegations. The diplomatic move reflects growing concern within the British government over the possibility of foreign-directed hostile activity on British soil.

Israel has reportedly shared intelligence with British authorities indicating a potential Iranian threat. The information has added to concerns among Western governments about the possible use of covert networks and intermediaries to target military facilities and other sensitive locations.

Iran Rejects the Allegations

Iran has firmly denied any involvement in the suspected plot. Iranian Ambassador Seyed Ali Mousavi said Tehran had no connection to the incident and called on the British government to provide evidence supporting its accusations.

The ambassador also indicated that Iran was prepared to cooperate with British authorities in investigating the matter.

The conflicting positions leave key questions unresolved, including the precise nature of the suspected operation, the extent of any foreign involvement and whether the arrests and the reported drone threat were connected.

Western Allies Express Concern

The United Kingdom, the United States and 27 other Western countries issued a joint statement condemning what they described as Iranian-linked threats, including alleged violent plots, arson, sabotage and cyberattacks.

The countries warned that the suspected activity demonstrated the potential for hostile operations to extend beyond national borders through covert networks and proxy actors.

The statement signals broader international concern about security risks associated with Iran and the possible consequences for European military installations.

Diplomatic Tensions Could Intensify

The allegations come amid heightened tensions involving Iran and Western powers over security in the Middle East. A confirmed attempt to target a US military installation in Britain would represent a serious development, with implications for European security and relations between Tehran and Western capitals.

For now, the investigation remains ongoing, and the allegations against Iran have not been independently established through publicly presented evidence. The British government has signalled its intention to strengthen security measures and pursue those responsible if foreign involvement is confirmed.

The coming days may bring further clarification as investigators examine the available intelligence and diplomatic discussions continue. The central questions remain whether the suspected operation was directed from Iran, how it was organised and what steps Britain and its allies will take in response.
