Young Utah Missionary Dies Suddenly While Serving in New Mexico

A 21-year-old missionary from Utah serving with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has died unexpectedly while on assignment in New Mexico, church representatives confirmed Sunday.

The missionary, identified as Elder Caleb Gene Martin of Salem, Utah, was found unresponsive in his residence on Saturday morning, January 3, 2026. According to church officials, he passed away peacefully during sleep. The exact cause of death has not yet been determined, and a medical examination is scheduled to provide further clarity.

Elder Martin had been assigned to the New Mexico Farmington Mission since May 2024 and was nearing the completion of his two-year term of service. Friends and fellow missionaries described him as dedicated, kind, and deeply committed to his faith and service responsibilities.

In a public statement, church spokesperson Sam Penrod expressed sympathy for those affected by the loss. He said the organization extends its deepest condolences to Elder Martin’s family, loved ones, and mission companions, emphasizing support and prayers during this difficult time.

“The loss of a young missionary is deeply felt throughout the church community,” Penrod noted. “Our thoughts are with those who are mourning, and we hope they find comfort through faith and shared remembrance.”

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints currently oversees tens of thousands of full-time missionaries worldwide, serving across hundreds of missions. Church leadership has indicated continued growth in its global missionary efforts throughout 2026.

Local authorities and church officials stated that no additional details would be released until medical findings are finalized.
