Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has announced that he will not pursue a third term in office, abruptly ending his reelection campaign following the emergence of federal campaign finance fraud allegations connected to his political circle.
In a statement released Monday, Walz acknowledged the seriousness of the situation but denied any personal involvement in wrongdoing. He said stepping aside from the race was a decision made “in the best interest of the state,” emphasizing the importance of maintaining public trust while an investigation continues.
Federal prosecutors are examining allegations involving tens of thousands of dollars in misused campaign funds. While Walz himself has not been charged, his campaign confirmed full cooperation with investigators.
The inquiry has also drawn attention to a senior political adviser linked to U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar. Prosecutors allege the adviser participated in a scheme that redirected funds intended for security services at campaign events. The adviser, who previously worked with Walz, has been suspended by Klobuchar’s office pending the outcome of the investigation. Senator Klobuchar described the allegations as deeply troubling and said immediate action was taken upon learning of the claims.
Despite withdrawing from the race, Walz used his announcement to reflect on his time in office. He highlighted policy achievements during his tenure, including legislation that positioned Minnesota as a destination for individuals seeking abortion access and gender-affirming healthcare. He also stressed his intention to support a smooth and orderly transition of leadership.
Walz, 61, has served as governor since 2019 and was previously a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. His sudden exit reshapes the political landscape in Minnesota, leaving the 2026 gubernatorial race wide open and prompting speculation about potential candidates from both major parties.
As the federal investigation proceeds, state officials and political observers are closely watching how the developments may influence upcoming elections and public confidence in Minnesota’s leadership.
