Fresh hostilities erupted overnight along the volatile Afghanistan–Pakistan border, where heavy gunfire and artillery exchanges between security forces from both sides resulted in civilian casualties and renewed regional concern.
The governor of Afghanistan’s Spin Boldak district in Kandahar province confirmed on Saturday that four civilians had been killed. Local authorities reported that the incident began late at night and continued into the early hours of the morning, forcing families to flee their homes for safety.
Residents described hours of loud explosions, with mortars and heavy weapons echoing through mountainous villages near the border. Emergency services were deployed after daybreak to recover the injured and assess damage to homes and infrastructure. Several houses reportedly suffered structural damage, though full assessments were still underway at the time of reporting.
The Pakistani military stated that the firing originated from the Afghan side of the border. Officials said troops responded to what they described as “unprovoked shelling.” No official figures have been released regarding military casualties from either side.
The border region between Afghanistan and Pakistan has long been a flashpoint due to its rugged terrain, shifting control zones, and the presence of militant networks. Islamabad has repeatedly accused Afghanistan’s ruling authorities of allowing armed groups to operate from its soil, allegations that Afghan officials have consistently denied.
In recent months, security incidents along the frontier have increased, including skirmishes, airspace violations, and clashes involving border posts. These confrontations have complicated already fragile diplomatic relations between the two neighboring states.
Security analysts warn that continued instability in the border belt could worsen humanitarian conditions for civilians living in the area, many of whom lack access to consistent healthcare, electricity, and secure transportation routes.
As of Saturday afternoon, there were no reported international reactions to the latest confrontation. However, diplomatic observers say regional powers are monitoring the situation closely, given the potential for further escalation.
For now, the atmosphere along the border remains tense, with additional security forces reportedly placed on high alert on both sides.
