Fresh waves of violence swept through parts of Nigeria’s north-central Niger State on Friday, leaving dozens of civilians dead, several others abducted, and entire communities reeling from destruction, according to local authorities and eyewitnesses.
The attacks unfolded in two separate local government areas, where heavily armed assailants struck both residential and commercial locations within hours, overwhelming residents and security presence.
In one incident, gunmen stormed a rural settlement in Shiroro Local Government Area during the afternoon, opening fire on villagers and setting homes ablaze. Barely hours later, a second attack was reported at a bustling weekly market in the Madaka area of Rafi Local Government Area. Witnesses said the attackers arrived on motorcycles, firing sporadically and forcing traders and shoppers to scatter. Multiple market stalls were torched, goods were destroyed, and at least 21 people were killed during the raid. Several individuals were also reportedly taken away by the attackers, though the exact number of abducted victims has not been confirmed.
Niger State officials acknowledged the incidents, describing them as part of a growing pattern of coordinated violence affecting rural communities.
