Emergency response logs released this week detail the final moments of Renee Good, a 37-year-old Minneapolis woman who was fatally shot by a federal immigration officer on January 7. The records also shed light on the tense and chaotic scene that unfolded as first responders attempted resuscitation while bystanders clashed verbally with law enforcement.
Emergency Response and Shooting Details
According to the documents, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers fired multiple rounds at Good shortly after 9:37 a.m., striking her inside her vehicle. Witnesses who phoned 911 described seeing an officer shoot through the windshield of Good’s SUV. Minutes later, Minneapolis Fire Department paramedics found her unresponsive with multiple gunshot wounds to the torso and head. Life-saving efforts, including CPR and a tourniquet, were performed before she was moved to a nearby ambulance staging area. Attempts to revive her at a hospital were ultimately unsuccessful, and she was declared dead at around 10:30 a.m.
Tensions Escalate at the Scene
Police and fire communications reveal that hostility between bystanders and federal officers escalated quickly. Within minutes of the shooting, additional units were requested to establish perimeter control. Video captured by witnesses showed a physician attempting to reach Good to check for vital signs, arguing with officers who ordered him to stand back. Communications later confirmed that the ICE agent who fired the shots, identified as Jonathan Ross, was removed from the scene and transported to a federal facility.
As tensions grew, local authorities reportedly urged federal personnel to withdraw entirely. After more than an hour of confrontation, ICE units departed, and crowds slowly dispersed.
Federal and Local Officials Offer Divergent Narratives
The Trump administration has defended Ross, claiming he acted in self-defense and alleging that Good attempted to drive into him. Senior officials described the incident as a “preventive response to a threat.” Those assertions have been challenged by state leaders and eyewitnesses, and video reviewed by investigators reportedly shows Good’s vehicle turning away from the agent prior to the gunfire. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz called for calm and urged demonstrators to avoid escalating confrontations with law enforcement.
Protests Expand Nationwide
Good’s killing has triggered sustained demonstrations in Minneapolis and other cities over the use of federal immigration enforcement personnel in domestic operations. In response to protests, the White House announced the deployment of hundreds of additional federal agents to Minnesota, describing the effort as part of an ongoing immigration operation in the state. Days later, President Trump threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act if protests intensified.
Minnesota officials have confirmed preparations to activate the National Guard amid concerns that clashes could worsen in the coming days.
