Vehicle Crashes Into Chabad-Lubavitch Headquarters in Brooklyn; Investigation Ongoing

A man was taken into police custody after a vehicle was driven into the Chabad-Lubavitch World Headquarters in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights neighborhood on Wednesday morning, prompting a major police investigation and renewed security concerns in the community.

According to authorities, the incident occurred around 9:45 a.m. when a silver sedan suddenly accelerated from a stopped position, jumped the sidewalk, and slammed into the exterior of the building at 770 Eastern Parkway. The car struck a concrete barrier and continued forward, coming to rest partially inside the synagogue area of the complex.

No injuries were reported, and officials confirmed that people inside the building were able to evacuate safely. Emergency responders and police units quickly secured the scene, and the driver was arrested without further incident. The suspect, identified by law enforcement sources as a man in his 30s, was later transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation.

Investigators revealed that the suspect has a documented history of prior arrests, including a 2025 incident in which he allegedly threw a brick through a window at the same Chabad headquarters. That earlier case resulted in criminal mischief charges that were classified as a hate crime. Authorities also confirmed previous arrests connected to incidents near the United Nations and Gracie Mansion.

The NYPD stated that the current case remains under active investigation, with the department’s Hate Crime Task Force assisting. While officials have not formally labeled the latest incident a hate crime, they emphasized that all potential motives are being carefully examined. Charges had not been finalized as of Thursday.

In a public statement, representatives of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement acknowledged damage to the building’s exterior but said daily religious and community activities continued without interruption. Structural assessments are underway to determine the full extent of the damage.

The incident has unsettled many residents in Crown Heights, an area deeply tied to the history of the Chabad movement. Community leaders have called for enhanced safety measures around religious institutions, citing ongoing concerns over targeted acts and past tensions in the neighborhood.

The building at 770 Eastern Parkway holds global significance as the spiritual and administrative center of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement, which operates thousands of outreach centers worldwide. It also served as the synagogue and office of the late Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, a highly revered figure within the movement.

Police have asked anyone with additional video footage or information related to the incident to contact investigators as the inquiry continues.
