A federal judge has temporarily blocked an attempt by the Trump administration to freeze nearly $10 billion in federal funds that support child welfare and social assistance programs in several U.S. states. The disputed funding comes from the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program, which provides states with federal dollars for child care subsidies, employment assistance, and direct financial support for low-income families with children.
The ruling was prompted by a lawsuit filed by California, New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Minnesota. The states argued the freeze was abrupt, legally unsupported, and threatened to destabilize essential public programs that rely on uninterrupted funding.
