Federal authorities are investigating the death of 18-year-old Florida resident Anna Kepner, who was discovered unresponsive aboard the Carnival cruise, prompting an active FBI probe that now includes scrutiny of her step-sibling, according to recently unsealed court filings.
Tragic Discovery at Sea
Kepner, a recent graduate of Temple Christian School in Titusville and a well-known member of the school’s cheerleading team, had been traveling with family on a Caribbean cruise when she went missing during the final night of the voyage. A shipwide search led crew members to a guest cabin where she was found unconscious. Despite immediate medical intervention, she could not be revived.
Authorities have not publicly released the date of the incident, citing the sensitive and ongoing nature of the investigation.
Rising Questions and Early Leads
The FBI, which handles major incidents involving U.S. citizens in international waters, confirmed it has opened a full inquiry. Federal documents reveal that Kepner’s step-sibling is being reviewed as a person of interest. While investigators have not disclosed specific evidence, the filings indicate the individual is “under close federal attention” as agents work to determine what happened in the hours before the teen’s death.
No arrests had been made at the time of publication, and investigators emphasized that all leads remain under examination.
Community in Mourning
News of Kepner’s death has shaken Titusville, where teachers, classmates, and friends remembered her as a spirited student with a gift for motivating others. Her cheer coach described her as “a bright, beautiful, and talented young lady with limitless potential.”
The family has requested privacy as the investigation continues.
Cruise Line Response
Carnival Cruise Line confirmed the incident, describing it as a “medical emergency” handled immediately by onboard personnel. The company said it is cooperating fully with federal authorities and extended its condolences to the Kepner family.
Cause of Death Pending
The medical examiner’s office will determine the official cause and manner of death. Federal investigators, along with Brevard County, continue to gather interviews, digital evidence, and cabin-level data from the ship.
As the FBI’s work moves forward, questions surrounding Kepner’s final hours remain unanswered. Officials say more information will be released once the medical findings and investigative steps are complete.
