Authorities in Indiana are conducting an intensive manhunt after a shooting at the Lafayette residence of Tippecanoe County Superior Court Judge Steven Meyer and his wife Kimberly on Sunday. The attack, which took place in a quiet suburban neighborhood west of Indianapolis, has alarmed both local residents and members of the state’s judiciary.
Police officials said the gunman approached the couple’s front door and allegedly claimed he had located the family’s dog before opening fire through the closed doorway. Judge Meyer was struck in the arm, while his wife sustained a hip wound. Both were transported for medical care and are expected to make full recoveries.
Investigators recovered multiple shell casings at the home as part of an active crime scene assessment. The Lafayette Police Department confirmed the case now involves cooperation between local agencies, state authorities, and federal partners, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation. No suspect description or motive has been publicly disclosed.
In a brief written statement, Kimberly Meyer thanked first responders, medical staff, and community members for their support, adding that she had “full faith” in the investigative work underway. City leadership offered similar assurances. Mayor Tony Roswarski condemned the shooting as “an intolerable act of violence” and said authorities would use every tool available to bring the individual responsible into custody.
The incident has also reignited discussions about threats faced by judges and their families. In a letter sent to Indiana’s judicial network, State Supreme Court Chief Justice Loretta H. Rush urged colleagues to remain cautious, noting that violence directed at public officials has become a growing national concern. “Any attack against members of the judiciary undermines public safety and the rule of law,” she wrote.
For now, police are urging residents with doorbell camera footage or information relevant to the shooting to contact investigators. The neighborhood where the attack occurred remains under heightened patrol as search efforts continue.
Authorities have not released additional updates on suspects or possible motives, but officials emphasized that the public will be notified as credible information becomes available.
