A powerful winter storm sweeping across much of the United States has plunged large portions of the country into hazardous conditions, disrupting travel, straining power systems, and prompting emergency declarations across dozens of states. The massive weather system spans more than a thousand miles, affecting regions from the southern Plains to the Northeast and placing more than 200 million people under winter weather alerts.
Meteorologists report that the storm is producing a dangerous combination of heavy snowfall, sleet, and prolonged freezing rain across at least 35 states. In addition to ice, large swaths of the country are experiencing intense snowfall. Forecasts predict double-digit snow totals in major metropolitan areas including New York City, Boston, and Oklahoma City. Parts of the central Appalachians and Ohio Valley could see accumulations exceeding two feet.
Behind the storm, an Arctic air mass is expected to bring dangerously cold temperatures. Wind chills are forecast to drop well below zero for millions of Americans, increasing the risk of frostbite, hypothermia, and prolonged infrastructure challenges, particularly for communities without power.
Growing Human Impact
Officials are closely monitoring the storm’s human toll. In New York City, three individuals believed to be experiencing homelessness were found dead amid the extreme cold. City leaders activated emergency cold-weather protocols, while New York Governor Kathy Hochul issued a statewide emergency declaration.
Public officials nationwide continue to emphasize preparedness, urging residents to stay indoors, conserve heat, check on vulnerable neighbors, and remain informed through official weather updates.
Schools, Events, and Businesses Shut Down
The storm has forced widespread closures across the country. School districts in several major cities have canceled classes, while universities and government offices have shifted to remote operations or closed entirely. Sporting events and public gatherings have also been postponed or rescheduled as conditions worsen.
As the storm continues to unfold, emergency managers warn that the combination of snow, ice, and extreme cold could result in prolonged disruptions. Authorities stress that caution and patience will be essential as communities work through one of the most significant winter weather events in years.
