Three Rochester police officers were injured late Friday night after coming under sudden gunfire while responding to a reported domestic disturbance on the city’s west side, authorities said. The armed suspect involved in the incident was later shot and killed by police.
According to police officials, officers were dispatched to a residence on Chili Avenue following a call reporting that a woman’s former partner was attempting to force his way into the home and may have been armed. The caller told dispatchers that he legally possessed a firearm and was inside the house at the time.
Officers arrived at the scene shortly after 10:30 p.m. While checking the exterior of the property, they encountered a man matching the suspect’s description near the side of the house. Police said the situation escalated almost immediately when the suspect opened fire at close range, striking two officers before they were able to react.
Gunfire continued as the suspect exchanged shots with both officers and the original caller. The caller was hit multiple times during the confrontation. The suspect then fled the immediate area.
Within minutes, another officer located the suspect nearby. Police said the suspect again fired his weapon, striking the officer. Officers returned fire during the encounter, fatally wounding the suspect.
Police reported that one officer sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body and is in stable condition. A second officer was critically injured and underwent emergency surgery but is now listed as stable. The third officer suffered serious injuries but is also expected to recover. The civilian who initially contacted police remains hospitalized with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities have not released the names of the officers, the suspect, or the injured civilian. The investigation remains active and is being reviewed according to department protocol.
Earlier on Saturday, city leaders participated in a separate community event aimed at youth development. Mayor Malik Evans attended the Mentor Up Winter Gala, where students were paired with professionals from various industries to practice networking skills and explore potential career paths. Organizers said the program is designed to provide guidance and encouragement to young people across the Rochester area.
Police officials emphasized that the two events are unrelated and asked the public for patience as investigators work to determine the full sequence of events surrounding Friday night’s shooting.
