Trump Backs Julia Letlow for Louisiana Senate, Challenging GOP Incumbent Bill Cassidy

President Donald Trump has thrown his support behind Louisiana Representative Julia Letlow for a possible U.S. Senate bid, signaling a major intra-party clash that could reshape Republican politics in the state. Trump issued the endorsement late Saturday on Truth Social, urging Letlow to enter the race and describing her as his preferred candidate for Republicans heading into the 2026 cycle.

Letlow, who has served in Congress since 2021, has not formally launched a Senate campaign. However, people familiar with the situation say preparations are underway and an announcement could come as early as Monday. In a social media post on X, Letlow thanked Trump for the support and said her focus was on securing a stronger future for the next generation – a message widely interpreted as confirmation of her intentions.

The endorsement sets up a direct confrontation with Senator Bill Cassidy, who is seeking a third term. Cassidy has been at odds with Trump since voting to convict him during the second impeachment trial in 2021. Although Cassidy has attempted to mend ties with the president, Trump has continued to signal disapproval, making the Louisiana contest one of the more personal Republican primaries of the upcoming election year.

Cassidy responded quickly to Trump’s move, reaffirming his re-election plans and expressing confidence that Louisiana voters would reward his record. The senator has emphasized his role in advancing healthcare legislation and his work as chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee – a position that carries substantial policy influence.

According to individuals briefed on recent conversations, Trump informed Senate Majority Leader John Thune on Friday that he intended to endorse Letlow. Thune, who campaigned with Cassidy days earlier, had encouraged Trump to remain neutral, warning that Cassidy’s committee leadership would be important for future Republican legislative priorities. The failed attempt at persuasion underscores the growing divide between Trump and parts of the Senate GOP establishment.

Republicans close to Cassidy privately expressed frustration following the endorsement, noting that White House officials had previously indicated Trump would not get involved in the race. The shift is particularly consequential due to Louisiana’s updated election system. Beginning in 2024, the state abandoned its longtime open “jungle” primary format in favor of closed party primaries for federal offices. Under the old system, Cassidy could have advanced even if he finished behind another Republican. The new rules require him to defeat Letlow outright within the GOP electorate before reaching the general election.

Strategists say Trump’s intervention dramatically increases the risk to Cassidy’s re-election prospects and could prompt additional conservative challengers to align behind Letlow. Meanwhile, attention is turning to her U.S. House seat. Should she launch a Senate campaign, Republicans are already considering names to run in the 5th Congressional District, with state Senator Rick Edmonds reportedly emerging as a leading option.

The filing deadline for Louisiana’s Senate seat is February 13, meaning candidates have less than a month to finalize their plans. With Trump now actively involved, the race is expected to become one of the most closely watched Republican primaries of 2026.
