Trump Iowa Campaign Stop Centers on Economy as Minneapolis Shooting Fallout Grows

President Donald Trump traveled to Iowa on Tuesday for a campaign-style appearance focused on promoting his administration’s economic record and rallying voters ahead of the midterm elections, even as national attention remained fixed on controversy surrounding fatal federal immigration shootings in Minneapolis.

Speaking at the Horizon Events Center in Clive, near Des Moines, Trump cast the November elections as a turning point for his policy agenda. He warned supporters that losing control of Congress would derail many of his priorities, repeatedly urging turnout and stressing the stakes of the midterms.

Trump highlighted what he described as strong economic conditions, claiming that incomes were rising, investment was increasing, inflation had been brought under control, and financial markets were performing well. He credited his administration for these developments and pointed to issues of local interest in Iowa, including ongoing congressional discussions over year-round E15 ethanol fuel sales and the elimination of an electric vehicle mandate.

Despite the White House framing the visit around affordability, Trump dismissed the term during his remarks, suggesting it was a recently invented political talking point. He asserted, without providing evidence, that grocery prices were falling sharply and implied that cost-of-living concerns were easing.

The tone of the speech shifted when Trump addressed immigration, offering dire hypothetical warnings about public safety and repeating claims that immigration enforcement operations primarily target serious criminals. He cited an unsubstantiated statistic suggesting a small segment of the population is responsible for the majority of crime.

Those comments came amid escalating criticism following the January 24 fatal shooting of ICU nurse Alex Pretti by federal agents in Minneapolis. The incident occurred during protests sparked by the January 7 shooting of Renee Good by an ICE officer. Trump described Pretti’s death as “very sad” and promised an honest investigation. He rejected an earlier claim by senior aide Stephen Miller labeling Pretti an “assassin,” though he added that Pretti should not have been carrying a firearm.

Trump confirmed that border enforcement official Tom Homan had been dispatched to Minnesota, suggesting the move could help calm tensions surrounding the ongoing immigration operation in the state.

The Iowa stop underscored the state’s political significance ahead of the midterms. Three of Iowa’s four U.S. House seats are considered competitive, including two rated as toss-ups, and the state has an open U.S. Senate seat. A recent Morning Consult poll showed Trump’s approval rating in Iowa at 48 percent, with 49 percent disapproval.

Outside the event, more than a thousand demonstrators gathered in a designated protest area, chanting slogans against ICE and calling for an end to aggressive federal immigration enforcement.

During the trip, Trump said Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem would remain in her position despite Democratic calls for her resignation. He also revealed that Renee Good’s parents were supporters of his, saying that detail made the situation even more painful for him personally. Earlier in the day, Trump made an unannounced stop at the Machine Shed restaurant in Urbandale, greeting diners and staff.

Elsewhere, the National Transportation Safety Board released findings criticizing the Federal Aviation Administration for systemic failures tied to a fatal 2025 midair collision near Washington, D.C. In Pennsylvania, Governor Josh Shapiro filed an amicus brief supporting Philadelphia’s lawsuit challenging the administration’s decision to remove a slavery exhibit from Independence National Historical Park.
