Two cyclists affiliated with a North Texas triathlon group lost their lives Saturday morning after a collision with a vehicle on a rural roadway in Denton County, authorities confirmed.
The crash occurred shortly after 8:15 a.m. along FM 455 East, near Fritcher Road, while members of the Frisco Triathlon Club were participating in a scheduled group ride. Law enforcement officials identified the victims as Scott Mages and Andre Kocher, both active members of the club.
Police said multiple emergency calls were received reporting that two cyclists had been struck by a vehicle. Officers from the Pilot Point Police Department, along with emergency medical teams from Pilot Point and the Celina Fire Department, were dispatched to the scene.
First responders attempted life-saving measures on both individuals. One cyclist was transported by ambulance to a hospital in Celina, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The second victim was airlifted by medical helicopter to a Plano hospital but was pronounced dead after arrival, officials said.
According to investigators, the driver involved in the crash initially continued a short distance down the road but returned to the scene before officers arrived. Police stated that the driver has cooperated fully with authorities. At this time, no arrests have been announced, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Officials noted that traffic reconstruction teams and neighboring law enforcement agencies are assisting as investigators work to determine the exact circumstances that led to the collision.
In a statement released later in the day, the Frisco Triathlon Club expressed deep sorrow over the loss, remembering both men as valued members who played an important role in supporting and mentoring others in the cycling community. The club announced plans to hold a memorial fun run in Frisco to honor their lives and contributions.
Police also used the incident to remind motorists and cyclists of Texas roadway laws. Under state transportation regulations, cyclists are granted the same rights and responsibilities as drivers of motor vehicles. Riders are generally required to stay near the right side of the road when traveling slower than traffic and are permitted to ride two abreast within a single lane.
Authorities encouraged anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has relevant information to contact local law enforcement as the investigation continues.
