A shooting in a rural area of Mount Airy on Thursday afternoon resulted in two fatalities and left two additional people seriously injured, prompting an active investigation by state and county authorities.
According to officials, the gunfire occurred shortly after 2 p.m. along Welcome Baptist Church Road in Surry County, an area located near the North Carolina–Virginia state line. Emergency responders from the Surry County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the scene within minutes after receiving reports of multiple victims.
Law enforcement confirmed that four individuals had been shot. Two were pronounced dead at the scene, while the remaining two victims were transported by medical helicopter to a regional hospital for advanced treatment. Authorities have not released information about the victims’ identities or current medical conditions.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) has joined the sheriff’s office in examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting. SBI spokesperson Chad Flowers stated that agents are actively collecting evidence and assisting local investigators. Officials have not yet disclosed whether a suspect has been identified or taken into custody.
The incident occurred across from Welcome Baptist Church. Church leaders addressed community concerns in a social media statement, clarifying that the shooting was not connected to church activities and that no members of the congregation were involved or harmed.
Authorities have not released details regarding a possible motive, and the investigation remains ongoing. Residents in the area were advised to avoid the immediate vicinity while officers continued their work.
