The United States has issued a new aviation warning for Venezuela, prompting several major airlines to suspend flights as political tensions between Washington and Caracas continue to escalate.
FAA Flags “Heightened Military Activity”
The Federal Aviation Administration released an emergency Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) on Sunday, alerting U.S. carriers to what it described as “heightened military activity and increased political instability” inside Venezuelan territory. According to the advisory, airlines operating in the region could face “potential safety risks,” particularly in airspace controlled by Venezuelan authorities.
The FAA rarely issues broad advisories unless it believes commercial aircraft may be exposed to unpredictable or hostile conditions, making this warning notable for its severity. Officials stated that rising friction between the United States and the government of Nicolás Maduro played a central role in the decision.
Airlines Move Quickly to Suspend Flights
Several carriers reacted within hours of the FAA announcement. American Airlines halted its long-running Miami–Caracas service indefinitely, citing the new security assessment. Spain’s Air Europa followed suit, canceling upcoming flights on the same route.
Airline representatives said the decision was directly tied to U.S. government guidance and that normal operations would not resume until a clearer picture of the security environment emerges.
Passengers affected by the cancellations have been offered rebooking options or refunds, though airlines cautioned that schedules may remain disrupted for an extended period.
