Vatican Names Bishop Ronald Hicks as Next Archbishop of New York

The Vatican has announced a major leadership transition in one of the most influential Catholic dioceses in the United States. Pope Leo XIV has officially appointed Bishop Ronald A. Hicks of Joliet, Illinois, as the next Archbishop of New York, accepting the retirement of Cardinal Timothy Dolan after nearly 16 years in the role.

Cardinal Dolan, who turned 75 earlier this year, submitted his resignation in accordance with Church law. While the transition process moves forward, he will continue overseeing the archdiocese as apostolic administrator until Bishop Hicks is formally installed.

A New Chapter for New York’s Catholic Community

At 58, Bishop Hicks is set to become the next spiritual leader for one of the nation’s largest Catholic populations, serving millions of parishioners across New York City and surrounding counties. Speaking after the announcement, Hicks expressed gratitude and humility, describing the appointment as a calling that comes with deep responsibility.

He emphasized a pastoral approach centered on faith, service, and community, while asking Catholics in New York to support him through prayer as he prepares to assume his new role.

Shared Roots With the First American Pope

The appointment carries a personal connection as well. Pope Leo XIV and Archbishop-designate Hicks share roots in the Chicago area, having grown up only blocks apart in neighboring suburbs. Church observers note that this shared background reflects a broader familiarity between the pope and the newly appointed archbishop.

Hicks was ordained as a priest in 1994 and later served in a variety of roles, including seminary leadership and international missionary work in Central America. His time abroad included years working with orphaned and vulnerable children, an experience that continues to shape his pastoral outlook.

Facing Financial and Institutional Challenges

Hicks steps into leadership during a demanding period for the Archdiocese of New York. The church is currently navigating complex mediation efforts related to past abuse cases while also implementing significant budget adjustments, including staff reductions and property sales.

Addressing these challenges, Hicks reaffirmed the Church’s obligation to prioritize accountability, transparency, and care for survivors, stating that safeguarding and healing must remain ongoing commitments rather than one-time efforts.

Cardinal Dolan’s Long Public Tenure

Cardinal Dolan has been one of the most visible Catholic leaders in the United States, known for his media presence and involvement in national civic events. His tenure included participation in multiple papal conclaves and appearances at high-profile political ceremonies.

Despite stepping down from administrative leadership, Dolan is expected to remain active in the archdiocese following his retirement.

Installation Planned for Early 2026

Archbishop-designate Hicks is scheduled to be formally installed at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Manhattan on February 6, 2026. The ceremony will be led by the Vatican’s top diplomatic representative to the United States and is expected to draw clergy and faithful from across the country.

As New York’s Catholic community prepares for this transition, church leaders say the focus remains on unity, renewal, and guiding the archdiocese through a changing religious and social landscape.
