Private Jet Linked to Houston Law Firm Crashes After Takeoff in Maine, Six Feared Dead

A private jet associated with a major Houston-based law firm crashed shortly after takeoff from Bangor International Airport in Maine on Sunday evening, with all six people on board presumed dead, according to aviation officials.

The incident occurred around 7:45 p.m. local time as winter weather conditions affected the region due to Winter Storm Fern. Despite snowfall and reduced visibility, airport authorities confirmed that operations were ongoing at the time, with other aircraft departing and landing normally.

The aircraft, a 2020 Bombardier Challenger 600 business jet, had arrived in Bangor earlier after departing from Houston’s Hobby Airport. Flight tracking data indicates the jet was preparing to continue an international journey to France when it went down moments after takeoff. Emergency responders reported that the plane overturned upon impact and was engulfed in flames shortly afterward.

Officials stated that no survivors were found at the crash site and no injured individuals were transported to nearby hospitals. Formal identification of the victims has not yet been completed, and authorities have not released an official passenger list.

However, individuals familiar with the matter confirmed that Tara Arnold, the wife of Arnold & Itkin co-founder Kurt Arnold, was among those aboard. Event planner Shawna Collins was also reported to have been on the flight. Neither Kurt Arnold nor fellow firm co-founder Jason Itkin were traveling on the aircraft.

Harris County Commissioner Lesley Briones, who previously worked at the firm and has personal ties to the Arnold family, described Tara Arnold as a deeply committed leader known for her compassion and community involvement.

The National Transportation Safety Board has launched a full investigation into the crash. Investigators will examine pilot actions, mechanical factors, and environmental conditions, including weather and runway status. A preliminary findings report is expected within 30 days, while a final determination of the cause could take over a year.

As a result of the crash and subsequent investigation, Bangor International Airport remained closed through Monday, disrupting flights and forcing multiple diversions across the region.

Arnold & Itkin is a nationally recognized personal injury law firm with a strong presence in political and philanthropic circles. The firm and its affiliated foundations have contributed heavily to political causes and recently announced a major financial commitment to University of Texas Athletics. As of Monday evening, the firm had not issued a public statement regarding the crash.

Several Texas lawmakers, including House Speaker Dustin Burrows and State Representative Jeff Leach, shared public messages expressing sympathy for the families affected by the tragedy.
