Indianapolis authorities have taken five people into custody following a late-night shooting that left an Indiana judge and his wife seriously wounded at their home earlier this week, officials confirmed Friday.
The incident occurred on the evening of January 22 at a residence on the north side of Indianapolis. Police identified the victims as Judge Steven Meyer, who serves on the Marion Superior Court, and his wife Kimberly Meyer, a local dentist. Emergency responders transported both to a nearby hospital, where they underwent surgery for gunshot injuries.
Hospital officials said Judge Meyer is currently in stable condition and recovering under close medical supervision. Kimberly remains hospitalized in critical condition, with doctors continuing intensive treatment.
According to investigators, three of the five individuals arrested are facing preliminary charges related to attempted murder. The remaining two suspects are being held on separate, unrelated charges as authorities work to determine their potential connection to the attack. Law enforcement emphasized that the investigation remains active and that additional charges could be filed as more evidence is reviewed.
Police believe the shooting was deliberate and targeted, though they have not disclosed a possible motive or the nature of any relationship between the suspects and the victims. Officials stressed there is no indication the incident was a random act of violence and said there is no ongoing threat to the public.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is leading the investigation with assistance from federal agencies, including the FBI and the U.S. Marshals Service. Authorities credited the multi-agency collaboration for the swift arrests made within days of the shooting.
Court records show Judge Meyer was appointed to the bench in 2023 and currently oversees civil cases in Marion County. Members of Indiana’s legal community reacted with shock and concern following the attack, describing Judge Meyer as a dedicated public servant known for professionalism and fairness in the courtroom.
“This is a deeply troubling act of violence against a member of our judiciary and his family,” one local legal professional said. “It underscores the risks public officials can face simply for doing their jobs.”
A court appearance for the suspects is expected in the coming days, where prosecutors are anticipated to outline the initial evidence in the case. Authorities said more details will be released as the investigation progresses.
