Magnitude 6.0 Earthquake Rattles Region Northwest of Anchorage Amid Surge in Alaska Seismic Activity

A strong magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck northwest of Anchorage on Thursday morning, adding to a series of tremors that have shaken Alaska throughout the past week. The quake hit at  8:11 a.m. local time on November 27, with its epicenter located at approximately 61.5700°N 150.75°W and at a depth of about 42.8 miles, according to data from the Alaska Earthquake Center.

Residents across Southcentral Alaska-including Anchorage, the Mat-Su Valley, and the Kenai Peninsula-reported feeling the ground move. Although the shaking was widespread, officials said there were no immediate signs of major damage or injuries. The center noted it had received a large number of reports from people who felt the quake but confirmed that no tsunami warning was issued.

The tremor comes during a period of heightened seismic activity across the state. Nearly 500 earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or greater have been recorded in Alaska over the last week, marking one of the most active stretches of the year. That uptick has included several notable quakes, such as a magnitude 5.8 event near the Denali Fault on November 22.

Seismologists told Alaska Public Media that they have been monitoring an ongoing swarm affecting multiple regions in the state. The latest 6.0-magnitude earthquake, they said, fits into this broader sequence of activity, which may continue in the coming days.

Alaska is considered one of the world’s most active seismic zones, accounting for more than half of all earthquakes recorded in the United States. Its position along the Pacific Ring of Fire makes the state especially prone to frequent and sometimes powerful geological shifts.

Officials continue to track aftershocks and review data from the event, but early assessments indicate that the region avoided serious impacts despite the strength of the quake.
