Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has accused President Donald Trump’s administration of political intimidation after federal agents searched her home in Washington, D.C., intensifying an already bitter confrontation between the president and one of his most outspoken critics.
The search took place early Monday, October 12, as part of an ongoing federal investigation. The Justice Department confirmed that Homeland Security Investigations agents carried out the operation under a search warrant authorized by a judge. Officials have not publicly disclosed all the details of the investigation.
Omar, who represents Minnesota in the U.S. House of Representatives, rejected the action as another attempt to target her politically. She said Trump had spent years directing false accusations and personal attacks against her and described the search as a further escalation of what she called a campaign of political intimidation.
The congresswoman also made clear that the incident would not stop her from speaking out against the administration.
Immigration Paperwork Under Investigation
The investigation reportedly concerns allegations of immigration fraud, including questions surrounding paperwork completed by Omar’s late father when she was a child. Omar was born in Somalia and later became a naturalized U.S. citizen.
Authorities have not publicly established that Omar committed immigration fraud, and the reported allegations should not be treated as proven wrongdoing. The precise scope of the investigation and the evidence supporting it remain unclear.
Federal officials have acknowledged that the search forms part of an active investigation but have declined to provide detailed information about the case. Tom Homan, the administration’s border czar, said the Justice Department was leading the inquiry alongside the Department of Homeland Security, without discussing its specific allegations.
The operation has attracted particular attention because it involves a sitting member of Congress who has repeatedly criticized the president’s immigration policies and political rhetoric.
Democrats Condemn the Federal Action
The search prompted a strong response from Democratic leaders in Congress, who questioned whether federal law enforcement was being used to pursue the president’s political opponents.
House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, along with Katherine Clark and Pete Aguilar, condemned the operation in a joint statement. They described the incident as deeply troubling and called for accountability over what they characterized as a potential abuse of government power.
Other Democratic lawmakers also voiced concern. Representative Ro Khanna questioned the targeting of political opponents and highlighted the implications for Muslim Americans. Representative Sydney Kamlager-Dove accused the administration of misusing federal authority against Omar, while Representative Pramila Jayapal described the search as an alarming use of law enforcement power against an elected official.
Several Democrats argued that the timing was especially concerning, with the November 3 midterm elections approaching. They suggested that the investigation could have political implications, although their accusations do not establish that the search was ordered for partisan reasons.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz also criticized the operation, arguing that the president was using the powers of his office against political rivals shortly before voters head to the polls.
