Three people were found dead inside a residence in Marin County, California, after authorities responded to reports of gunfire Sunday evening, prompting an investigation into what officials believe was a suspected murder-suicide.
Emergency services received a 911 call shortly after 5 p.m. on October 11 reporting gunshots inside a home on Strawberry Circle in the Strawberry community near Mill Valley. Deputies from the Marin County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene and made contact with the person who had called for help.
The caller was able to leave the residence safely. After securing the surrounding area, deputies entered the home and discovered three deceased individuals.
Victims Identified as Former Police Officials and Their Daughter
The three people who died were identified as Kevin Mannix, 68, a retired San Francisco police sergeant; his estranged wife, Ann Mannix, 65, a retired deputy chief with the same police department; and their 24-year-old daughter, Katherine Elizabeth Mannix.
Investigators’ preliminary findings indicate that the incident was a double homicide followed by the suspected shooter’s death. Kevin Mannix is believed to have shot his wife and daughter before dying at the scene. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
Officials have not publicly established a motive for the shooting, and the investigation remains ongoing.
A Distinguished Career in Law Enforcement
Ann Mannix had a long career in law enforcement and was recognized for breaking barriers within the San Francisco Police Department. She became the first woman to join the department’s SWAT team and later became the first woman to lead it.
She subsequently held senior leadership positions overseeing field operations and special operations before retiring in 2021.
Kevin Mannix also served for many years with the department, retiring in 2018 after a career that included service as a sergeant.
The deaths of the former officers and their daughter have brought grief to colleagues and members of the law enforcement community. Department representatives have expressed condolences to the family, friends and former colleagues affected by the tragedy.
Community Not Considered at Risk
Authorities have stated that there is no known ongoing threat to the wider community. Investigators have continued examining the residence and gathering evidence to establish the full sequence of events.
The shooting occurred in an unincorporated area of Marin County, where law enforcement officials maintained control of the scene during the initial investigation.
The incident has raised serious questions about the circumstances that led to the deaths of three members of the same family. However, investigators have not publicly disclosed a confirmed motive, and the findings remain subject to further investigation.
Investigation Continues
The Marin County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to examine the evidence and determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Autopsies were scheduled to help establish the official causes of death.
Authorities have not indicated when the investigation will be completed. Additional findings may provide further clarity about the events leading up to the shooting.
The deaths of the three family members, including two retired law enforcement officials, have left their relatives, friends and former colleagues mourning a devastating loss.
