Weather officials warn that the combination of frigid temperatures and gusty winds could make outdoor exposure hazardous, particularly overnight and during the early morning hours. Wind chill values are expected to sink as low as minus 30 degrees, increasing the risk of frostbite within minutes for anyone without proper protection.
Cold Alerts Across Multiple Counties
Meteorologists have placed much of the region under cold-weather advisories through Sunday morning. Counties across northern and central Illinois, as well as parts of northwest Indiana and southeastern Wisconsin, are included in the alerts. Officials say the warnings reflect not only the extreme cold but also the prolonged duration of the event.
Some southern counties are also under winter weather advisories due to light snow, which could create slick driving conditions, especially as freezing temperatures limit the effectiveness of road treatments.
Snowfall Remains Limited but Hazardous
While this system is not expected to produce heavy snow, intermittent flurries and snow showers moved through the region late Friday into Saturday. Areas south of Interstate 80 may see a few inches of accumulation, while Chicago itself is likely to receive little more than a light coating.
Despite the modest snowfall totals, transportation officials caution that icy patches may develop quickly due to the extreme cold, making bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads especially dangerous.
Extreme Cold Peaks Overnight
Temperatures struggled to rise above the low teens during the day Saturday and are forecast to drop below zero overnight in many locations. The coldest conditions are expected late Saturday night into early Sunday, when biting winds could push wind chills to their lowest levels of the weekend.
Sunday morning is projected to be the harshest period, with continued bitter cold lingering into the afternoon despite lighter winds. Officials emphasize that exposed skin can freeze rapidly under these conditions and urge residents to limit time outdoors.
Cities Activate Warming Measures
Local governments have activated emergency responses to protect vulnerable residents. Several municipalities, including Aurora, have opened overnight warming centers offering heated shelter, meals, and sleeping accommodations. City leaders say these measures are critical to preventing cold-related injuries and deaths.
Authorities are also reminding residents to check on elderly neighbors, ensure pets are brought indoors, and take precautions to prevent frozen pipes.
Milder Weather Expected Next Week
Relief from the deep freeze may be on the way. Forecasters indicate a noticeable warming trend beginning early next week, with daytime temperatures potentially climbing into the 40s by midweek.
Until then, residents are urged to remain cautious, dress in layers, and stay informed through official weather updates as the region endures one of its coldest stretches of the season.
