The U.S. Department of the Treasury has terminated every active contract with consulting giant Booz Allen Hamilton following a serious breach involving confidential Internal Revenue Service records, federal officials confirmed Monday.
According to Treasury officials, the decision was made after investigators determined that sensitive taxpayer data had been improperly disclosed, raising significant concerns about the contractor’s ability to protect highly restricted government information. The cancellation applies to all agreements between the department and Booz Allen Hamilton, though officials declined to release the financial scope of the terminated contracts.
The breach centered on unauthorized access to IRS tax return files, including records connected to President Donald Trump as well as other individuals. Treasury representatives described the incident as a critical failure in data security protocols, prompting immediate administrative action.
“This was not a minor lapse,” a Treasury spokesperson said, emphasizing that safeguarding taxpayer information is a foundational requirement for any federal contractor. “The seriousness of this incident demanded a decisive response.”
Booz Allen Hamilton acknowledged the Treasury’s decision and said it is cooperating fully with multiple government investigations now underway. In a statement, the firm said it remains committed to strengthening its security measures and maintaining compliance with federal data protection standards.
Oversight bodies have launched formal inquiries into how the breach occurred and whether existing safeguards were properly enforced. The Treasury Department’s inspector general is leading one of the investigations, focusing on accountability and systemic weaknesses that may have contributed to the leak.
The contract terminations mark one of the most sweeping actions taken by the Treasury Department against a private contractor in response to a data security incident. Analysts say the move sends a strong signal across the federal contracting sector about the consequences of failing to protect sensitive government records.
As investigations continue, officials indicated that further administrative or legal actions could follow, depending on the findings.
